Burst pipe or major leak
- Turn off the water at the main stop tap. It's usually at the water meter near the front boundary, or where the pipe enters the house.
- Stay away from power points and the switchboard if there's water near them.
- Open the lowest tap to drain what's left in the pipes, and move belongings out of the wet area.
- Call us and tell us where the water is coming from.
Blocked drain or overflowing toilet
- Stop using the toilets, sinks and shower, and don't flush.
- Don't pour drain cleaner down. Harsh chemicals can burn skin and make the job harder and less safe to fix.
- If a toilet is overflowing, turn off the small isolation tap behind or beside it.
- Call us. If water is coming up in the yard or a gully, tell us where.
No hot water
- Check the power is on at the switchboard, or that a gas unit's display or pilot light is on. Don't remove any covers.
- If water is leaking from the tank, turn off the cold water supply to the system and the power or gas to it.
- Don't try to repair gas or electrical parts yourself.
- Call us. The brand and age of the system, if you know them, helps.
Leave first. Call after.
Smell of gas
- Leave the building straight away and take everyone with you.
- Don't use light switches, lighters or anything that could spark on the way out.
- Once you're outside and clear, call 000 or your gas network's emergency line.
- Don't go back in until it's been declared safe. Then call us to find and fix the cause.
